The Palace of Supreme Harmony aka Thai Hoa Dien is known as the throne room of Nguyen Emperors. This richly decorated wooden palace painted gold and red was constructed in 1803. In its imperial glory in the 19th century, it was where the emperor held special events, ceremonies, and festivals for the new moon. This is also where the emperor received dignitaries. Throngs of mandarins paid their respects to his highness while he sat on his elevated throne.

Soak in the Alba Thanh Tan Hot Springs 

If you want to get outside Hue then head to the Alba Thanh Tan Hot Springs which is around 30 kilometers from the city center. Resembling Hoi An’s Japanese Bridge, this covered walkway was built in 1771 as a shrine to Japanese local Tran Thi Dao, who bequeathed her life savings for its construction. Childless and without a family, she offered her funds to the Thanh Toan Village for a new bridge to connect townspeople on both sides of the canal.  

Located 8km (5 miles) outside Hue, this bridge is reached by way of the peaceful countryside, making it a pleasant escape from the bustling city. On the far side of the bridge is a small museum displaying ancient farming equipment that you can take a look at.

Tips for traveling to Hue in December 

  • Do dress appropriately when visiting royal tombs and the Imperial City as well as other palaces and temples of the complex. It’s now a requirement that visitors are not allowed to wear tank tops, strapless, shorts, or above-knee skirts. 
  • Remember to stay hydrated as the humidity in December is quite high and can make you tired after spending a lot of time walking. 

What to pack?

  • As it is wintertime and the day could get chilly so you should bring waterproof jackets, some light sweaters, layers with some shorts, and short-sleeved shirts for the day when it gets hot and has a high level of humidity.
