Yes, Vietnam is generally a very safe destination for Canadian travellers, including solo adventurers, families, and seniors. With its stable political climate, low crime rates, and friendly locals, Vietnam consistently ranks among the top recommended places to visit in Asia. However, it’s still important to be aware of a few safety-related considerations for a smooth journey.
Public Security
Vietnam is politically stable with low violent crime rates. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching may occur in crowded tourist areas, so keep your belongings close and avoid showing valuables in public.
Traffic Safety
Traffic in major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can be chaotic, with a high number of motorbikes and limited pedestrian infrastructure. Always be cautious when crossing streets and consider using ride-hailing apps like Grab instead of renting motorbikes unless you’re experienced.
Food & Drink Hygiene
Street food is a highlight of Vietnam, but make sure to eat at stalls or restaurants that are busy and appear clean. Avoid tap water - stick to bottled water and use it even when brushing your teeth. Be cautious with ice and unwashed fruits.
Natural Disasters
Vietnam’s climate includes typhoons (July - October in Central and Northern regions) and seasonal flooding in the Mekong Delta and Central areas. Check weather updates and avoid affected regions during heavy rains.
Health Care
Vietnam has international hospitals in major cities like Vinmec, French Hospital, and FV Hospital. These offer 24/7 care with English-speaking doctors and multilingual staff.
Vaccinations
Before heading to Vietnam, Canadians are advised to consult a travel clinic and consider the following vaccinations:
- Routine immunizations (measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, etc.)
- Hepatitis A – recommended for most travellers
- Hepatitis B – especially if staying long-term or seeking medical care
- Typhoid – particularly if travelling to rural or less-developed areas
- Tetanus booster – if not updated
- Japanese Encephalitis – for rural stays or travel during the rainy season
- Rabies – if engaging in outdoor activities or animal interaction

Generally, when traveling to Vietnam, you have to notice two important things about the electricity in this country - plugs and voltage:
Canada | Vietnam | |
Frequency | 60 Hz | 50 Hz |
Voltage | 120 V | 220 V |
Socket Types | A / B (2 / 3-pin flat socket) | C / F (2 / 3-pin round socket) |
If your device supports dual voltage (100V–240V) — common for items like phone chargers and laptops — you only need a plug adapter to fit the socket.
If your device supports only 120V — common for appliances like hairdryers or curling irons — you will need both a voltage converter (transformer) and a plug adapter to use it safely in Vietnam.
Yes, you should. Though Travel Insurance is not always mandatory for international travel, buying it is still a wise decision since the insurance will prevent you from unpredictable financial losses.
Medical emergencies, flight cancellations, money losses, etc., can happen at any time during your future trip - and when they occur, the insurance will work and take care of your expenses. Hence, Travel Insurance is very important for your trip.
It’s highly recommended to buy Travel Insurance in your country before the journey. If you need help buying insurance, contact our sales consultants for support.

Currently, Vietnam is positioned 34th on the global fixed internet ranking while standing 19th in mobile internet speed. Thus, accessing the internet in this country is as easy as pie. Excluding some specific places, such as secluded mountainous areas or offshore, free WiFi can be found in airports, coffee shops, restaurants, and hotels.
However, for more stable, faster WiFi, you should purchase a 4G/ 5G SIM card to access the Internet at any time of day. A Vietnamese SIM is not too expensive, only from USD 5.5, and you can buy them on platforms like Klook / KKday, or at airports, phone stores, and mobile network providers’ stores. Also, there are options for eSim, which are a little cheaper, only from US $4.
Best mobile network brands in Vietnam:
SIM Card Providers | Price Per 4G SIM |
---|---|
Viettel | From US $6.5 - 16.5 |
Vinafone | From US $5.5 - 7.5 |
Mobifone | From US $4.5 - 9.5 |

Less
