Find the Best Mekong River Cruises

Definitely yes. The Mekong River is among the world's best enchanting river cruise destinations. Why is it worth it?

• Scenic riverscape: Cruising is the most fascinating way to get closer to the tranquil waters, floating villages, and lush mangroves.
• Relaxation & comfort: Mekong River ships offer well-appointed cabins, cozy lounges, and spacious decks where you can enjoy your comfort in mind and body.
• Off-the-beaten-path route: From 2 to 11 days, the cruise itinerary will let you admire all the hidden gems of the mighty Mekong, including local workshops, floating markets, fruit orchards, temples & pagodas, etc.
• Cultural immersion: Let's take a chance to engage in the traditional life on waterways, unique cultures from diverse countries, and genuine people.

The best month to take a Mekong River cruise is from November to April next year, an ideal time during the dry season. There are lower chances of rain and cooler temperatures. So that you can enjoy offboard activities and beautiful sightseeing.

The cruise starting points depend on the countries you want to discover. You can follow the list beyond to know where you will start your Mekong River journey.

• Vietnam: Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City
• Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap
• Laos: Luang Prabang, Huay Xai

Both low water (mid-Nov to end-Aug) and high water (end-Aug to mid-Nov) have similar onshore excursions but the sequence may differ.

The main distinction is that the water levels only influence the itinerary in Cambodia (between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh), while the Vietnam itinerary is unchanged.

In particular, Mekong River cruises can make a lake crossing in the high-water season and visit many attractions in Tonle Sap. Ships can also dock directly at the Siem Reap pier. During low water season, the dock will be located at Kampong Cham.

Note: The exact dates of the high and low seasons are determined by rainfall and water levels each year. Mekong cruise lines will adjust their schedules on short notice.

The dresscode for Mekong River cruise is lightweight and smart casual clothes. To be more specific, you should take notice of these followings:

• Choose summer and autumn outfits due to the tropical climate in Mekong
• Dress "more than casual," such as a collared shirt for men and a dressy top for women, on some special nights
• Wear comfortable shoes or sandals since you have to walk on uneven surfaces and cobblestones during offshore excursions

It depends on how much of the region you'd like to explore. Each option provides a unique experience, from floating markets to ancient temples and rural life along the river.

• 2–3 days are perfect for a short getaway through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
• 4–8 days offer a well-rounded journey between Vietnam and Cambodia, ideal for first-time visitors.
• 9–11 days suit those seeking a deeper, more immersive cruise through Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.

Whether you choose an upstream or downstream cruise, both offer exceptional cultural immersion and scenic views along the Mekong. However, the direction can influence the pace and logistics of your trip:

Upstream cruises (from Vietnam to Cambodia or Laos) generally offer a slower, more relaxed pace. They typically start in Ho Chi Minh City, a well-connected hub with frequent international flights, and end in places like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap—perfect if you’d like to add on a visit to Angkor Wat.

Downstream cruises (from Cambodia or Laos to Vietnam) cover slightly more ground in less time. These often begin in Siem Reap or Luang Prabang, ending in Ho Chi Minh City, which makes it convenient for onward travel or flights home.

Consider your preferred arrival and departure cities, as well as available flight routes. While both cruise directions offer similar itineraries, many travellers prefer starting in Vietnam due to better flight connections and visa processing.

Yes, many Mekong River cruise packages can be customized with pre- and post-cruise tours to enhance your travel experience.

Whether you'd like to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, or other destinations before or after your cruise, most cruise operators and travel agencies offer flexible add-on tour options. These may include city tours, cultural excursions, food experiences, or even beach holidays in Vietnam or Thailand.
