FAQs
Definitely yes. The Mekong River is among the world's best enchanting river cruise destinations. Why is it worth it?
- Scenic riverscape: Cruising is the most fascinating way to get closer to the tranquil waters, floating villages, and lush mangroves.
- Relaxation & comfort: Mekong River ships offer well-appointed cabins, cozy lounges, and spacious decks where you can enjoy your comfort in mind and body.
- Off-the-beaten-path route: From 2 to 11 days, the cruise itinerary will let you admire all the hidden gems of the mighty Mekong, including local workshops, floating markets, fruit orchards, temples & pagodas, etc.
- Cultural immersion: Let's take a chance to engage in the traditional life on waterways, unique cultures from diverse countries, and genuine people.
The best month to take a Mekong River cruise is from November to April next year, an ideal time during the dry season. There are lower chances of rain and cooler temperatures. So that you can enjoy offboard activities and beautiful sightseeing.
The cruise starting points depend on the countries you want to discover. You can follow the list beyond to know where you will start your Mekong River journey.
- Vietnam: Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City
- Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap
- Laos: Luang Prabang, Huay Xai
Both low water (mid-Nov to end-Aug) and high water (end-Aug to mid-Nov) have similar onshore excursions but the sequence may differ.
The main distinction is that the water levels only influence the itinerary in Cambodia (between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh), while the Vietnam itinerary is unchanged.
In particular, Mekong River cruises can make a lake crossing in the high-water season and visit many attractions in Tonle Sap. Ships can also dock directly at the Siem Reap pier. During low water season, the dock will be located at Kampong Cham.
Note: The exact dates of the high and low seasons are determined by rainfall and water levels each year. Mekong cruise lines will adjust their schedules on short notice.
The dresscode for Mekong River cruise is lightweight and smart casual clothes. To be more specific, you should take notice of these followings:
- Choose summer and autumn outfits due to the tropical climate in Mekong
- Dress "more than casual," such as a collared shirt for men and a dressy top for women, on some special nights
- Wear comfortable shoes or sandals since you have to walk on uneven surfaces and cobblestones during offshore excursions
It depends on how much of the region you'd like to explore. Each option provides a unique experience, from floating markets to ancient temples and rural life along the river.
- 2–3 days are perfect for a short getaway through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
- 4–8 days offer a well-rounded journey between Vietnam and Cambodia, ideal for first-time visitors.
- 9–11 days suit those seeking a deeper, more immersive cruise through Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.
The cost of a Mekong River cruise depends on the trip's length and comfort level. On average, cruises range from £155 to £3,650 per person.
Here’s a general breakdown by duration:
- 1–2 nights: From £155 - £725
- 3–6 nights: From £540 - £3,650
- 7–9 nights: From £1,295 - £3,660
- Over 9 nights: From £2,120
Most cruises cover accommodation, meals, and guided excursions. However, visa fees, premium drinks, and optional services are usually not included.
Here are five top-rated Mekong River cruises perfect for UK travellers, offering a blend of comfort, cultural discovery, and exceptional service:
- RV Mekong Navigator – From £849 (3–7 nights): An elegant all-suite ship featuring classic French-colonial décor and curated Vietnam–Cambodia itineraries.

- Mekong Eyes Classic – From £158 (1–2 nights): A budget-friendly traditional wooden boat that provides a peaceful escape in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
- RV Mekong Princess – From £635 (2–7 nights): An intimate, upscale cruise with only 14 suites, offering personalized service and refined comfort.

Want tailored advice? Our travel consultants are ready to help you pick the perfect Mekong River cruise.
Whether you choose an upstream or downstream cruise, both offer exceptional cultural immersion and scenic views along the Mekong. However, the direction can influence the pace and logistics of your trip:
Upstream cruises (from Vietnam to Cambodia or Laos) generally offer a slower, more relaxed pace. They typically start in Ho Chi Minh City, a well-connected hub with frequent international flights, and end in places like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap—perfect if you’d like to add on a visit to Angkor Wat.
Downstream cruises (from Cambodia or Laos to Vietnam) cover slightly more ground in less time. These often begin in Siem Reap or Luang Prabang, ending in Ho Chi Minh City, which makes it convenient for onward travel or flights home.
Consider your preferred arrival and departure cities, as well as available flight routes. While both cruise directions offer similar itineraries, many travellers prefer starting in Vietnam due to better flight connections and visa processing.
Yes, many Mekong River cruise packages can be customized with pre- and post-cruise tours to enhance your travel experience.
Whether you'd like to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, or other destinations before or after your cruise, most cruise operators and travel agencies offer flexible add-on tour options. These may include city tours, cultural excursions, food experiences, or even beach holidays in Vietnam or Thailand.
Tip: It's best to plan your custom tours when booking your cruise to secure availability, especially during peak seasons. Please contact us for a seamless itinerary tailored to your interests, timeframe, and budget.

Hi I am interested in booking a HCMC to SR river cruise for 3 people (two cabins). one cabin twin share, one cabin single supplement. We would like to travel departing January 15 2025 or dates as soon after that as possible. Can you please reply with information and prices, thank you

Hi, I was hoping you could assist me with a booking. I am looking to do a cruise for 3nights/4days while I am in Ho Chi Minh City for work. I am looking forward to the 12th of April to start the cruise. I do want a ship that has a private balcony, perhaps some cultural entertainment at night and spa services. I like the idea of upstream, as I love tropical beaches, etc but also love the idea of the markets on the river, etc. What are your recommendations? I look forward to hearing back from you. I will be travelling on my own. I was looking at this one, however, just wondering about transit since I will be flying in and out of Ho Chi Minh City.
Hi! According to your request. We suggest you should book RV Mekong Princess Cruise Upstream 3 days: Saigon - Can Tho and then return to HCMC for departure flight by private car or shuttle bus.
Or else, you can book a Mekong Delta 3 day tour package to explore more in this area.
As you only have a few days and departure from HCMC, it isn't recommended to have a cruise tour to Cambodia as you don't have enough time. Also, there's no option for cruise with beach in itinerary from HCMC

The 1st time we used an online travel agent, rather than an online booking agent. Ms. Mia from BestPrice Travel helped us book a berth on La Marguerite for an amazing trip from Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap. She came to meet us at our hotel before departure on the Mekong to be sure all was well and gave us gifts to help on our way.
We were looking forward to meeting people. It is a bit disappointing that they changed us to a smaller boat, as the bigger one doesn't have enough guests. They should advertise it during the low season. We were looking forward, as I said, to meeting people on the boat, and now I will just be with my husband, which was not my plan.
Cambodia is a lovely country, and we had a dream come true by taking a cruise along the Mekong River. There was little information, and we had a difficult time selecting a cruise line. There were few options. My Uyen from Bestprice Travel booked this ship and land vacation in Cambodia for us. We have no reason to complain. Amazing beauty along the river; a wonderful trip, if modest.
Thanks Hang, enjoying our cruise up the Mekong a lot. The Jahan is a beautiful boat.
The ship is just right for us. I enjoyed breakfast and the pool's amazing location.
Our upstream cruise began on September 19th and just grew better as we went along. My companion, Jeannie, and I absolutely loved each day and evening.

My companion, Jeannie, and I absolutely loved each day and evening.
The personnel on board were fantastic, always willing to assist, and sometimes just before I needed it (I'm 81), nothing, and I mean nothing, was too much bother, and of course, a huge smile went along with it. Such wonderful weather during the trip.
I hope I have piqued my friends' interest in taking one of your cruises. Less
