We (two couples) are interested in small boat trips in the upper Mekong, including 3-4 days to wander Luang Prabang on our own. We would consider dates in September 2026. I've looked at Mekong Sun Cruise, Heritage Line, and Mekong Pearl Cruise. Which would you recommend--and what are its advantages? Would you recommend the upstream or downstream trips and would you recommend the extension from LP to Chiang Rai? Can you book these for us once we make a choice? Do you have other recommendations?
Hi! Due to your options, Heritage Line Anouvong is the most premium choice, Mekong Pearl is a more affordable price option for long Laos river journey, and Mekong Sun only offers short journey (4-6 days). You can make your decision due to your budget, travel time, and also the service & boat standard that you want.
About the itinerary, as September is a good time with high water height (except for the rain), upstream & downstream aren't really different. However, most of our guest choose the downstream option as it's follow the river flow and the itinerary feels better everyday (good for an happy ending). In contrast, if your prefer more tranquil journey, upstream is a good option as not many tourists choose this route.
