Halong Bay is 500km far away to Sapa & it will be very hard if you have only one day. Please see 2 options below:
Option 1: By bus: you can take an overnight bus from Sapa to Hanoi, arriving about 6:00 AM in the morning. Relax then take another day bus (about 3 hours) to Halong Bay.
Option 2: By Train & Bus: you can take an overnight train back to Hanoi, arriving around 5:00 AM then 3 hours by bus to Halong Bay.
Main attractions in Sapa are Cat Cat village, Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, Ta Van, Fansipan Mountain, Muong Hoa flower valley.... These are among the most famous places with stunning beauty.
Best time to visit Sapa is from March to October. The weather will be nice and cool even in the summer, it is a little bit hot but still much cooler than it is in Hanoi or other cities in the delta. Besides, best time to see the stunning beauty of the terrace fields is from November to February, it will be pretty cold and foggy here. But, it is a unique experience when visiting Sapa in the coldest time of the year.

You can choose following options to travel from Hanoi to Sapa:
There are 2 options for you to visit Fansipan mountain : trekking or cable car. For trekking, it will take you about 2 -3 days and require a good strength to finish the trek. Another way is to take the cable car which will be easier for you and also a great chance to see the beauty of the area from a high view.
Middle or late of September will be the best time for you to visit the terrace fields here in Sapa. That is the time the rice terrace fields become ripe and turn into the beautiful yellow color before the local harvest the fields in the October.
If you have about 2 to 3 days free and no hustle, I would recommend you to visit Sapa, it will be a nice place with many attractions and interesting ethnic culture to experience
Staying overnight with a local family will give you more experience about the local life, culture and their way of living. But if you would like a nice place with quiet accommodation, I would recommend you to stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel in Sapa
