Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is located on a hill that overlooks the pretty town of Phetchaburi. For years, the park has been known with the name of Phra Nakhon Khiri (which means "Holy city hill"); however, it is more familiar to the locals as Khao Wang (Hill with palace).

As the names suggest, in Phra Nakhon Khiri, there are three building groups, which are a palace with adjoining structure, a 40-meter white chedi called Phra That Chom Phet, and the Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Each of them is respectively situated on the western peak, the middle or center peak, and the eastern peak of a 95-meter hill.

The whole complex was finished in the year of 1860 and constructed as a summer palace for the royal family by King Mongkut, hence another name – Phetchaburi Palace. Under his sovereign, the king used to live here for a long time, and put up a celestial observatory on the tower of Ho Chatchawan Wiang Chai next to Phetchaburi Palace, as he was interested in science, innovation, and astronomy. Now, the observatory is remained and has become a highlight that gives tourists coming to Phetchaburi Palace an interesting experience of catching sight of Phetchaburi town and the surrounding area from Phra Nakhon Khiri.

On 27th August 1979, Phra Nakhon Khiri was registered as a history park; so far, the park has been one of the most recommended destinations in Thailand that attract thousands of tourists each year.

The best time to get to Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is from November to February, as the weather in this time is quite favorable for you to thoroughly enjoy your vacation, whereas from April to June is extremely hot and experiences heavy rains from July to October.
