Thai Hua Museum is located on Krabi Road in Phuket Town. It was built in 1917 and was formerly a school first called ‘Phuket Huabun School’, and later ‘Ratjunhua School’, but now it turns to be a beautiful museum, one of the most beautiful in town. The building got a citation from the Association of Siamese Architects for outstanding conservation of architectural arts in 2008. The museum consists of 13 exhibition rooms sitting in a two-story British-colonial style mansion displaying the history of the first Chinese immigrants in Phuket during the tin-mining era of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.

1. What to see in Thai Hua Museum

The museum is not too academic like other museums, the history here is well displayed and explained. There is not too much about the island’s history, but you will have a chance to know more about all the significant figures who influenced the course of Phuket history in the past centuries, including several Chinese families still prominent today. Learn how the Chinese immigrants left their homeland due to poverty, came to Phuket to make good, and what was the trade in the past, very influenced by the tin mining.

Visitors to this museum are recommended to start the visit at a room marked Chinese Migration on the second floor and then proceed clockwise to other rooms, before moving down and continuing the tour of rooms on the first floor. The galleries on the ground floor cover various aspects of the Thai-Chinese culture, such as dress, education, buildings, and food. Coming to the museum, visitors can not only see historical pictures of the old town area but also will be able to touch or play with subjects on exhibit.

13 exhibition rooms in the museum are 13 interesting rooms to visit. There is room to explain Phuket’s architecture, with a good map to help you find all the most significant buildings around Phuket town. Other rooms are dedicated to tin mining, Chinese migration, Phuket birth, marriage and death rituals, and Phuket Chinese traditional dress, while there is a room focusing on the origins and contents of Phuket cuisine including khanom jeen noodles. This room has a useful map showing some of the best eateries in Phuket town where you can find different types of traditional cuisine.

All information at the museum is available in both Thai and English, while some multimedia presentations are presented in Chinese.

2. Opening time and entrance fee

The museum opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm except for Wednesdays, and public holidays. The admission fee is 50 baht for Thais and 200 baht for foreigners. You pay extra 200 baht if you want to take photos.
