The South East Asian food was really fantastic, and the chef was quite friendly. He led us on a tour of a Mekong Delta village food market, where he purchased fresh vegetables and fruits for that night's meal, explaining what he was purchasing and how he planned to prepare them.
We planned the 8-day upriver cruise (from Saigon to Siem Reap) and were glad we did because Cambodia is considerably less populous and more untouched than the Vietnam section of the delta, so the trip only grew better. It concluded in Siem Reap (only a few minutes from Angkor Wat), which is a highlight in itself. The trips can only be conducted during the few months when the water is high enough to reach Siem Reap. Early October appears to be the safest and best period. Remember that the weather is quite hot and humid, so dress lightly. When visiting temples, you must cover your shoulders and wear shorts that reach your knees.
If you just want to take a three or four-day trip, we recommend the four-day section from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap.
Because of the afternoon sun, the staterooms on the east side of the boat are likely to be nicer than those on the west. We got to the west side, and by early afternoon, the sun was too bright and hot to sit on our balcony. Our sole issue of the trip was that smoking was permitted in the swimming pool area. Less

The staff was fantastic and beyond sensitive to everyone's needs: they greeted you by name, answered your questions quickly, and shared themselves in lectures and chats to provide you with an authentic experience with real people. The food was an amazing combination of local and (to us) new and intriguing flavors, as well as familiar fare, all wonderful, fresh, and elegantly presented in a variety of locations (indoors and outside). Wine and other beverages were of excellent quality and abundantly given. Accommodations are ideal for a cruise ship: with floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony (in our case), we appreciated the huge room (and bathroom with two sinks!!) and the views from the moment we awoke in our extremely comfy bed. The ship was pristine, and the cleaning service (including free laundry) appears to be quick. We chose shoulder season (mid-June), which was ideal: reduced prices, nice weather, and the staff outnumbered the guests 2:1. It is well worth saving up for this trip, which was our second with Aqua Expeditions after the equally rewarding Aqua Amazon experience. Less
