As one of the fastest aviation markets all over the world, Vietnam is going to welcome the new airway, Vietravel Airlines. This newest face promises to offer greater opportunities for both domestic and international flights in Vietnam.

Established by one of the Vietnam’s largest tour operators, Vietravel Airline is oriented to provide both domestic and international air transport services which contribute to the development of tourism industry, air cargo and other socio-economic factors in Vietnam. The airline is under the last procedures to get ready for its maiden flight in 2021, when the COVID-19 spread settles down. Also, it is the time when the global economy and tourism industry will gradually recover after the outbreak and international flights in Vietnam are almost open for inbound tourists.

On May 7th 2020, Vietravel Airlines celebrated an official establishment by announcing the approval of Vietnam’s Prime Minister for its investment policy. Previously, on April 3th, Deputy Prime Minister signed Decision No.457/QD-TTg with a view to approve the Vietravel Airlines project with a total investment capital off VND 700 billion (over USD 30 million) and the headquarter at Phu Bai International Airport, Thua Thien Hue Province. Vietravel Airlines is a purely Vietnamese airline, only invested by domestic stake holders.

Vietravel Airlines offers travelers various choices of flights to Vietnam

In the first year of operation, the estimated target of Vietravel Airlines is around one million passengers including either its own tourists or general passengers. It is also scheduled that the airline will start with a fleet of 3 aircraft in first year and with an expansion of the fleet to 8 aircraft in the 5th year of operation. There are different types of Vietravel Airlines’ aircraft such as Airbus A321neo, Boeing 737 and other similar aircraft.

Flight routes of Vietravel Airlines

For domestic flights in Vietnam, Vietravel Airlines aims at Chu Lai Airport to serve the area of Da Nang – Quang Nam – Quang Ngai; Van Don Aiport for the area of Quang Ninh – Hanoi – Hai Phong; and Can Tho Airport for the area of Mekong Delta River. The focus on provincial airports is set to avoid the overload at the main international airports in Vietnam.

For international flights to Vietnam, the flight network will include main destinations in Southeast Asia like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and other targeted countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China and Australia.

By the first half of 2021, Vietravel Airlines will be able to take of the maiden flight as soon as the aviation market recovers from the COVID-19 outbreak. It takes Vietravel Airlines about 6 months to complete air transport license and air operator certificate (AOC). In preparation for the operation next year, Vietravel Airlines recruits experienced senior staffs as well as high-quality human resources inside and outside Vietnam.

Until now, Vietnam has 5 operational airlines: Vietnam Airlines (the national airway), Jetstar Pacific Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Air Services (VASCO) and Bamboo Airways.

In addition to the newly launched Vietravel Airlines, there are two other airlines: Kite Air (owned by Thien Minh Aviation Company) and Vietstar Air (a joint venture airline between private and military entities), which are waiting for operational authorization. While Kite Air aims to serve local passengers with underdeveloped aviation infrastructure such as Dien Bien, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, and Con Dao; Vietstar Air provides prime services for individuals, groups, local and foreign businesses. 

Due to the COVID-19, Vietnamese airlines, as well as global aviation market, have been suffering such a huge loss in 2020. According to the estimations of Vietnamese airlines, the Ministry of Transport announced that the initial deficit running at VND 30 trillion (approximately USD 1.3 billion). The launching of new airline at the moment is either a big challenge or promising future for Vietnamese airlines after the outbreak.
