Angkor Silk Farm
Set in an eight-hectare-wide mulberry farm in the countryside of Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Silk Farm is the perfect half-day excursion away from the busier parts of the city center. It is a worthwhile visit for those who appreciate the art of handmade crafts and are curious to learn about the silk-making process while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
The artisans at Angkor Silk Farm, Siem Reap.
Angkor Silk Farm was created by the National Silk Centre. Artisans Angkor, dedicated to revitalizing and preserving traditional art practices in Cambodia, was founded to become a vocational organism for people trained by the National Silk Centre. The organization now features over twenty silk workshops all across Siem Reap Province. Besides fulfilling the role of a social business, Angkor Silk Farm Siem Reap is known as the place where the finest silk fabrics and accessories in the industry are produced.
Upon arrival, you will meet a guide who will then take you on a free tour discovering the entirety of the silk-weaving process, which will answer all your questions about the quality of Cambodia-made silk. To begin with, there are mulberry trees that maintain the diet of silkworms, raw cocoons soaked in hot water, complex processes of dyeing threads, and the Cambodian Ikat weaving technique. Visitors will appreciate the appealing mulberry plantation setting and amaze at the artisans in action, making silk threads with the most skillful and time-consuming process to create the desired pattern. At the end of the guided tour, you will be in awe by the complexity with which silk was made.
Silk weaving is an extremely complex process and takes lots of training.
You have the opportunity to wander around the spacious place to take your mind off the bustling streets of the city and be astounded by the beauty of nature and human virtuosity. These fields are the starting point of the whole process of silk-making as silkworms will eat and grow on them. Angkor Silk Farm is a must-see destination in Siem Reap, providing a safe haven for those on a relaxing holiday, so we recommend paying it a visit along with the famous sites of Angkor Wat or the lively Pub Street.
Angkor Silk Farm also features high-quality workshops where you can buy silk products made onsite. It is a great place to get premium souvenirs and gifts. Here, you can easily pay your purchases with USD. Artisans Angkor’s signature product is the Hôl Lboeuk scarf — usually worn during ceremonies in Cambodia.
It might take 30 days to make this kind of scarf.
There are various ways you can get to Angkor Silk Farm, but the most economical and convenient way is taking the free shuttle bus from their main workshops in the city center, offered twice a day. It will take only 20 minutes to reach your destination. If you want to take advantage of the free shuttle, book a seat in advance either by phone by phone: 855 (0) 12 222 404, or at email@example.com.
Another choice is to book a taxi or tuk-tuk for 15-20$, including waiting time for the driver at the Silk Farm and a ride back. For travelers considering this option, we recommend hiring a driver to also take you to the lotus farm and other nearby attractions.
