Koe Thaung Temple

Koe-Thaung translates to “shrine of the 90,000 images of the Buddha”, referring to the number of Buddha images that it contained. 

Koe Thaung Temple is a massive monument, built of stone walls and stone terraces. The temple is located on a plain a few kilometers East of the Royal Palace. If you've ever been overwhelmed by the Angkor Wat temple hidden in the morning mist of Cambodian land, you can never resist the magnificent beauty of Koe Thaung temple, the largest structure in Mrauk U.

Koe Thaung Temple was built between 1554 and 1556, yet still remains its rustic and primitive beauty up to date. This is a magnificent destination in Mrauk U with over 90,000 statues, the largest scale in the region. Visiting this temple, visitors will immediately be impressed by the characteristic ancient architecture built from fired bricks back in the 15th century. Suffering from the ups and downs of history, Koe Thaung with thousands of Indian-influenced Buddha statues are just immersed in the ancient yet majestic atmosphere, making tourists feel like they’re lost in a real fairy garden.

Koe Thaung is a sacred temple and plays a historical role in the life of the locals. The temple houses a large Buddha statue, where tourists usually come to pray for prosperity. In addition to the usual Buddha statues, there are also many bronze statues; each possesses a very interesting shape. The corridor’s walls are adorned with thousands of small images of the Buddha, sculpted in bas relief.

At dusk, Mrauk U's mist is a powerful weapon that makes every photo scenic and uniquely attractive. Even up to 7 o'clock, people still see little fog being stuck at the top of the temple, making it look like a hammock caught in the sky.

Tourists should catch a flight from Yangon to get to Mrauk U, and then take a boat along the Kaladan River. The weather is pretty hot and humid, so wearing sun coats is highly recommended.
