Myanmar Reopens For Tourists [Updated on 24 December 2022]

April 05, 2023 - 2703 views

Travel restrictions outside of major cities and military checkpoints on roads are common in Myanmar, which is trying to attain economic and political stability due to civil disorder and armed conflict.

Myanmar reopened for tourism

The Current Situation In Myanmar

Because of social unrest and armed war, Myanmar is attempting to restore economic and political stability. That is the present status quo of Myanmar.

As a result, travel is restricted outside of main cities and military checkpoints along the roads are frequent. The government recommends tourists who are coming to the country should travel by flight (only between tourist destinations). For the selling season of 2023, there will be no trains, express buses, cruises, or road trips.

Tourists must stay away from the areas of Chin, Kachin, Kayin, Rakhine, Shan, Sagaing, and Magway where armed conflict and civil disturbance occur, and the circumstances might change at any time.

Before traveling to Myanmar, all visitors must need permission to visit. Permission from the local government is required to visit certain areas due to the popularity of military checkpoints set up along the roads.

Covid-19 Travel Requirements

On 20th May 2022, Myanmar reopened for tourism after the lockdown of Covid-19. If the visitors are fully vaccinated, they do not have to do PCR Tests or be isolated. The purpose of this decision is to develop tourism and restore the nation’s economy after the closed-door policy for 2 years.

The details about this policy are below:

  • For fully vaccinated travelers

Visitors who are fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arriving in Myanmar are exempt from PCR tests and quarantine. (Tourists must carry both the original and an English version of the vaccination certificate)

  • For insufficient vaccinated travelers

Visitors who are not fully vaccinated must have laboratory proof of a Covid-19 negative result (RT-PCR) issued within 72 hours before their arrival in Myanmar.

Note: The policy can be changed in the future.

Ask a Question
10/12/2022

Hello, My wife and I are planning a trip to Myanmar. We are not vaccinated. We will be arriving January 11th leaving February 7th. I understand we will need to provide a negative covid test within 72 hours of departure. Will we need to quarantine upon arrival or will we be free to begin travels once we arrive? Please advise as this will affect our trip. Thank you, David Mecham

@David Mecham:

Hi! As far as we know, at present, for people who have not been vaccinated for covid-19, they must have Covid 19 negative result by PCR test within 48 hours before on board. However, you should contact directly the Myanmar Embassy in your country to have more information for immigration rules and procedures in 2023 and update if there's anything change in next year.
