And heaven and earth start to welcome September, which is considered the most emotional and romantic month of autumn. How is the Vietnam weather in September? Is it worth visiting Vietnam in September? Please find all answers in my article below.

Vietnam Weather September Overview

September marks the beginning of autumn and is one of the most beautiful months to travel to Vietnam thanks to its comfortable climate. As it is the changing time between the hot and cold seasons, there will be a fluctuating temperature difference between the early and the end of this month. Vietnam’s average temperature in September is about 24°C - 33°C. Along with the decrease in rainfall in both the North and South regions, September weather is said to be very beautiful and suitable for travelling almost anywhere in the country.

Weather in North

September is considered one of the fantastic times to visit North Vietnam. It is the end of summer with light occasional showers and mostly clear sky. North Vietnam’s average temperature in September is about 28°C, and you can expect cooler temperatures in the high and far mountainous areas such as Sapa or Mu Cang Chai.

Thanks to the ideal weather, late September is a particularly picturesque time of year to see the golden rice fields in North Vietnam. During this month, the rice turns from yellow-green to golden colors which is the sign of harvest time. These dreamy rice terraces are a splendid sight to behold, especially for photographers.

Weather in Central

Unfortunately, September is the rainy season in Central Vietnam which is not really suitable for any tourism activities. Throughout this month, rain is on the increase in the central region’s cities like Hoi An, Hue, and Da Nang, Dalat, and the Central Highlands. Thanks to the unstoppable rains, September weather in Central Vietnam is really chilly; however, it’s also wet and there might be storms and floods toward the end of this month. If you insist on visiting Central Vietnam during September, Mui Ne (Phan Thiet) is the most promising destination as these places have less rain than other places in the region.

Weather in South

In September, although South Vietnam remains wet, it seems like the rainy season here is coming to an end as the rainfall decreases as the month progresses. As a result of the hot weather from last summer and also the tropical climate, the September temperatures in South Vietnam can be high (avg temp: 28°C), but the rain can make you feel better. It is also the flooding season in Mekong Delta, which surprisingly is a very beautiful time here and suitable for any water activities.

September 2nd is Vietnam National Independence Day and is celebrated across the country. On this occasion, you can see National flags, pictures, etc. of Ho Chi Minh President adorn the streets in big and small cities here. However, as the heart of the country and also the most important political centre, Hanoi Capital owns the biggest celebrations with a large parade in Ba Dinh Square in front of Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, many great performances taking place in a few days, and also the gorgeous fireworks at the 2nd Sept night. Something to note is that some shops and restaurants may be closed this time or provide services at higher prices.

Lan Ha Bay

Some tourists avoid travelling to Lan Ha Bay this time, but there is a reason to go. September is autumn in Lan Ha bay with a little bit of rain which does not last long. You can enjoy a cool breeze and more comfortable weather than in the summer. Moreover, this is the off-peak season for local tourists as the school reopens and you can easily find a lot of promotions when booking the Lan Ha Bay cruise. Fewer tourists mean you get better service and the bay is more peaceful, and you have a chance to fully enjoy the breathtaking Halong Bay with a crystal clear blue sky and seawater, or join swimming and other activities in the water such as try snorkelling, kayaking, and visiting floating villages.

Mui Ne (Phan Thiet)

Some rain in the Central can not prevent you from getting closer to the beach as it does not matter if you’ll get wet on the beach one way or another. September is the first month of autumn in Mui Ne (Phan Thiet) and as mentioned above, this place in Central Vietnam is where would have the least rain in September. The weather here is cooler than the previous month as the temperature is in the range of an average high of 30°C and an average low of 24°C and the seawater temperature is around 28°C. All show that September is a great time for beach relaxing in Mui Ne and enjoy other activities here such as swimming in the windsurfing, or kitesurfing (thanks to strong sea breezes).

Mekong Delta

Although September is the rainy season in Mekong Delta (South Vietnam), it is also the time that you can see the unique beauty of this area that is hard to find anywhere else. As it usually rains in this month, the water level in rivers and fields rises thrivingly, creating the annual floating water season which will last from September till November.

More water brings a better life for plants and creatures in the Mekong Delta; therefore, September - November is the best time to see the natural beauty of this area. You should spend time visiting national parks and natural reserves here to admire the precious birds (some kinds even in the Red Book) and the wild beauty of Mangrove forests.

In addition, the Mekong Delta is home to many fruit orchards which provide fresh tropical fruits all year round. You should also visit an orchard to taste the delightful fruits here at a very cheap price. Cai Be Orchard (Tien Giang Province), Cai Mon Orchard (Ben Tre Province), Vinh Long Orchard are among the best orchards in the Mekong Delta where you can find a variety of fruits through four seasons of the year, and some outstanding types are Nam Roi Pomelo and Binh Hoa Phuoc rambutan, and a wide selection of other fruits, like durian, longan, tangerine, mango, etc.
