Dragon Bridge’s Story

Although a fire-breathing dragon might seem like something from a fairy tale, the residents of Da Nang, Vietnam, have created the stunning Dragon Bridge to bring this mythical monster to life. The Han River-spanning bridge connects the Da Nang International Airport with the region's busiest beaches and the city center. On March 29, 2013, this magnificent work of engineering, which is fashioned like a dragon and really exhales fire, was officially opened to honor the nation's long history and the 38th anniversary of the conclusion of the Vietnam War.

The bridge's construction started in 2009. The dragon's body is a sloping steel arch that is 568 m (1,191 ft) in length and weighs more than 2,000 tons, making it the largest structure of its sort in Vietnam. Two 128 m (420 ft) side portions flank the 37.5 m (123 ft) the broad main body of the bridge. The construction has a dragon's head perched on one end and a tail on the other to give the appearance of a huge dragon soaring through the sky.

Vietnamese tradition attaches significance to the dragon as a symbol of the Ly Dynasty. The dragon is said to soar to the sea and return with good fortune. Residents are hoping that luck will continue to shine on the thriving city while a dragon soars high in their skies. And based on the media attention and public appreciation the bridge has received, it appears like they won't be let down.
