Both low water (mid-Nov to end-Aug) and high water (end-Aug to mid-Nov) have similar onshore excursions but the sequence may differ.
The main distinction is that the water levels only influence the itinerary in Cambodia (between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh), while the Vietnam itinerary is unchanged.
In particular, Mekong River cruises can make a lake crossing in the high-water season and visit many attractions in Tonle Sap. Ships can also dock directly at the Siem Reap pier. During low water season, the dock will be located at Kampong Cham.
Note: The exact dates of the high and low seasons are determined by rainfall and water levels each year. Mekong cruise lines will adjust their schedules on short notice.
The dresscode for Mekong River cruise is lightweight and smart casual clothes. To be more specific, you should take notice of these followings:
- Choose summer and autumn outfits due to the tropical climate in Mekong
- Dress "more than casual," such as a collared shirt for men and a dressy top for women, on some special nights
- Wear comfortable shoes or sandals since you have to walk on uneven surfaces and cobblestones during offshore excursions
Both upstream and downstream cruises on the Mekong River offer similar cultural highlights, but the direction can affect your travel experience:
Upstream cruises (e.g., from Vietnam to Cambodia or Laos) travel against the current. These tend to be slightly more relaxed, offering longer cruising hours and a gentler pace. It’s ideal if you’d like to start your trip in Ho Chi Minh City and end in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
Downstream cruises (e.g., from Cambodia or Laos to Vietnam) go with the river flow, often covering distances a bit faster. These are great if you want to begin your trip in Siem Reap or Luang Prabang and finish in vibrant southern Vietnam.
Note: Consider your preferred start/end point, flight routes, visa requirements, and how much time you want to spend cruising versus on land. There’s no “better” option—just what fits your plan best!
Yes, many Mekong River cruise packages can be customized with pre- and post-cruise tours to enhance your travel experience.
Whether you'd like to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, or other destinations before or after your cruise, most cruise operators and travel agencies offer flexible add-on tour options. These may include city tours, cultural excursions, food experiences, or even beach holidays in Vietnam or Thailand.
Tip: It's best to plan your custom tours when booking your cruise to secure availability, especially during peak seasons. Please contact us for a seamless itinerary tailored to your interests, timeframe, and budget.

Hi I am interested in booking a HCMC to SR river cruise for 3 people (two cabins). one cabin twin share, one cabin single supplement. We would like to travel departing January 15 2025 or dates as soon after that as possible. Can you please reply with information and prices, thank you
Our travel consultant is checking available option and send you via email.
Hi, I was hoping you could assist me with a booking. I am looking to do a cruise for 3nights/4days while I am in Ho Chi Minh City for work. I am looking forward to the 12th of April to start the cruise. I do want a ship that has a private balcony, perhaps some cultural entertainment at night and spa services. I like the idea of upstream, as I love tropical beaches, etc but also love the idea of the markets on the river, etc. What are your recommendations? I look forward to hearing back from you. I will be travelling on my own. I was looking at this one, however, just wondering about transit since I will be flying in and out of Ho Chi Minh City.
Hi! According to your request. We suggest you should book RV Mekong Princess Cruise Upstream 3 days: Saigon - Can Tho and then return to HCMC for departure flight by private car or shuttle bus.
Or else, you can book a Mekong Delta 3 day tour package to explore more in this area.
As you only have a few days and departure from HCMC, it isn't recommended to have a cruise tour to Cambodia as you don't have enough time. Also, there's no option for cruise with beach in itinerary from HCMC

The boat is beautifully fitted out with gorgeous cabins, and we enjoyed our little balcony, especially in the morning when the weather was cooler. Special mention to the elephant sanctuary and the kayaking. Tips - brand new US dollars are required everywhere in Laos, with no tears or folds. These are required for the Laos visa, preferably for the e-visa.
Transfer:
The transfer was perfectly on time to the minute and worked out very smoothly.
Service:
The service on the boat was also outstanding – very friendly and attentive throughout the trip.
Thank you again for the great experience!
Best regards,
We had such a great time on our cruise on the Mekong. Ms. Janet always responded to me quickly when I had questions.
The cruise was so fun. My kids loved it. Chuc was especially attentive to my younger kids and made things for them and joked with them.
Lots of help with transfers and lots of information about getting Cambodian visas. Everything was so easy!
We booked the Heritage Line Jayavarman cruise for 7 day cruise on the Mekong River with Anna from BestPrice Travel.
Best exeperience!
It looks good; however, there was no program on board at night.
What worked well was the shuttle. Since we traveled alone, it was virtually a private transfer. On the first day, we were alone on the boat, and on the second day, only two other guests came. That also surprised us very much.
Thank you for your great support all the time!
