Located 25km from Hanoi, Dong Ky Village belongs to Dong Quang commune, Tien Don District, Bac Ninh province. At one time known as the ‘Fire Cracker Village’, it has evolved into high quality wood furniture making since fire crackers is prohibited all over the country and now is filled with sawing and chiseling sounds.

Fire cracker tradition
For its old tradition, Dong Ky villagers still hold a Fire Cracker festival every year on 4th of Lunar January where they makes a huge fire cracker with 10 metres length and 02 metres in diameter. However, instead of gun powder, wood is used instead with the embellished carvings of dragons, phoenixes, clouds and other traditional designs. This kind of cracker is solemnly carried to the ground of the community’s central square by strong boys and beautiful girls in traditional costumes.

Highly sophisticated wood carving
Presently, Dong Ky Village survive by making wood carving furniture both private and state run workshops. The craftsmanship is superb; the hardwood used for the large pieces of furniture is talauma, ebony; Sindora wood, iron wood for the objects whose surface must be polished and manglietia is used for smaller pieces to be finely carved and decorated. The most common pieces are tables, chairs, cupboards, and carved beds. The styles are traditional and timeless with wood carved and inlaid with mother of pearl in the shape of plants, flowers, butterflies or people, as well as mountains and rivers together with boats and bridges.
