Overview of Golden Rock

Golden Rock lies on the edge of the famous Kyaiktiyo Mountant 1100 meters high, which explains the name of the temple from its location on a big rock covered full of gold leaf.

Golden Rock Pagoda is one of the three most sacred temples in Myanmar, along with the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Temple.

In legend, Golden Rock is associated with Buddha’s story of his visit to Mount Kyaiktiyo. During preaching time, the Buddha gave Taik Tha hermit a hair, then he hid it in a tuft safely. After that, the hair was headed to the King with the wish that it would be preserved in rock shaped like a head of the hermit.

The King inherited the superpowers of his parent Zawgyi god and Naga goddess, and helped find the stone that had a similar shape with a head. The stone was then moved to Kyaikhtiyo mountain and the Buddha's hair was preserved within.

Golden Rock 

The Golden Rock is attractive as one of the most holy destinations in Burma, making tourists curious. Over time, it has evolved into a popular spot for Myanmar photography tours, attracting enthusiasts seeking to capture its beauty.

The rock every day stuck with gleaming gold leaves is about 7.3 meters (24 ft) in height. One surprising thing is that the exposed surface between two boulders is only 78 cm2. The small pagoda on the peak is 25 feet.

How to get there

The Golden Rock Pagoda is 67 miles (108 km) east of Bago and 130 miles (210 km) northeast of Yangon. The distance is not great but the trip to the Temple is worth discovering. Many alternatives to get to the Golden Rock Pagoda, some references below. 

By Bus

• Price: From 8$ per trip

Departing from Bago City will take around 2 hours and from Yangon will take 4 hours depending on the traffic and stops. 

Bus fares are typically low, allowing you to save money for other aspects of your journey. Also, during the trip, you may have the chance to interact with fellow passengers, enhancing your cultural understanding.

By Taxi 

• Price: From 140$ per trip

A faster alternative to get to Mount Kyaiktiyo is by taxi, taking half the time than by bus. Taxis are always available in Yangon and Bago to Kinpun village. From here, travelers take a ride in an open car to drive up the mountain.

When entering temples or religious sites, dress modestly, and respect local customs and religious tradition. You have to take off your shoes and socks if you walk in the entrance gate of the temple.
