How to get there from Hanoi?

For most travelers, the journey to Ba Mun Island is easiest to picture as follows: Hanoi → Ao Tien Port → Ba Mun Island. 

From Hanoi to Ao Tien International Port / Cai Rong Port

First, we travel by road from Hanoi to Ao Tien Port (3 - 5km apart), which is around 210km away. Thanks to the Hanoi - Hai Phong - Mong Cai expressway, the journey by road usually takes around 3 hours in normal traffic. 

The most convenient choice for travelers is usually a shared bus or limousine car (9 - 11 seats), which generally costs around US$ 15 - 20/person/way. For an exclusive ride,  a private car is ideal at a higher price, roughly US $ 80 - 120/vehicle/way, depending on the operator.

From Ao Tien Port to Ba Mun Island

Ba Mun Island is approximately 15 km from Ao Tien Port. It does not have regular public ferry tickets for independent travelers because the island is part of a protected national park; it needs advance arrangements with the park management.

If you are physically fit, the 1st route starts at the Van Lau ranger station. Passing through pristine forest areas, you can see rare trees firsthand and may spot wild animals. Upon reaching the island’s eastern side, you can visit Danh Temple and Round Stone Beach while admiring the vast, blue waters of the bay. Afterward, the route leads to Hon Di, where you will board a boat to continue your journey. This section spans 8 km, requiring approximately 3 - 4 hours.

The second route requires less time and physical exertion. Stretching from La Che Bay to Cai Cong, this path allows you to observe rare plants such as Kim Giao, Tùng La Hán, and various mangrove species. You will also pass freshwater streams, preferred habitats for soft-shell turtles and otters, etc. This section covers 5 km, taking about 2 to 3 hours.

The best time to visit Ba Mun Island is from October to November, when the weather is cool, less rainy, and suitable for outdoor activities. March to May is a good choice before the summer heat comes.For exploring the island, morning is ideal.
